About the Course

Uncover the possibilities of portrait photography with artist Juli Manara.

During this weekend course, you will learn to create digital portraits filled with personality. Drawing inspiration from artists featured in our exhibition, Brasil! Brasil! The Birth of Modernism, you will consider how you can use composition, location, background, props, and design to capture different characters and moods.

Guided by artist Juli Manara, you will use portraiture and self-portraiture to discover experimental techniques spearheaded by modernist artists, such as photomontage and multiple exposure. Whether you’re an enthusiastic photographer or just starting out, you will develop your understanding of cameras, lighting, and refine your ability to set and shoot portraits.

Juli Manara is a Brazilian artist and educator living and working in London. Juli’s practice is concerned with the relationship between nature and the material world. Inspired by surrealism and influenced by her Brazilian roots, Juli’s practice spans a variety of subjects and techniques, including portraits, still life, photomontage, and animated media. Juli’s work has been collected and exhibited internationally, including at Niterói Museum of Contemporary Art and Tate Modern. Juli holds an MA from the Goldsmiths University and has taught extensively at Paris’ Speos International Photography School.
