Nurtured by Nature

A commission  inspired by The Macallan Estate's natural environment

-

In early 2024, Juli Manara received an invitation to create a special and unique artwork for The Macallan's new boutique, set to open in 2025 at Heathrow Airport in London.

Designed in collaboration with Jamie Fobert, the internationally acclaimed architect behind landmark projects including the National Portrait Gallery extension, the 84sqm boutique brings to life The Macallan’s new experiential retail concept, “Nurtured by Nature”. The space is a study in refined materiality and thoughtful craftsmanship, delivering an immersive, multisensorial experience that expresses The Macallan’s deep ties to nature and ethics with the environment.

The Macallan Estate

Inserted into nature

-

The Macallan Estate, beautifully situated on the banks of the iconic River Spey, is a sanctuary of nature, teeming with lush forests and a diverse array of wildlife.  Juli spent hours exploring every detail, from the delicate micro plants to the trees. Working with two cameras and three different lenses, to capture hundreds of images to create a final work. A response to her personal feelings and memories of the time spent.

So, The Botanic Series,  a triptych artwork, was created by reflecting the natural woods and wildlife surrounding the Estate.

Copper Stills and the Forest

A connection with nature

-

Exploring The Macallan Estate, the artist was inspired to create a large-scale triptych that embodies a forest. Each carefully selected image showcases the trees, ensuring visibility from all angles of the boutique. The vibrant leaves highlight nature's intricate veins, while a surrealistic style features diverse plants, evoking the dreamlike beauty of the forest.

Inside the Macallan distillery are the distinctive copper stills. So these stills, in the artist's surreal imagination,  were inserted amidst the Estate's Forests, showcasing the connection between whisky and nature. The natural colours of The Macallan are one important detail for the quality of their whiskies. They mirror the vibrant tones of autumn that were dominant in the artwork.

"....It’s the first time we’ve seen the space with the artwork fully installed, and it ties everything together beautifully. We gave Juli a brief, then took her to the estate so she could experience it firsthand. She incorporated subtle elements like our curiously small stills, which define our signature flavour. It really brings a sense of place and strengthens the overall concept..."

"....Adding another layer of meaning to this experience was the presence of Juli Manara, a Brazilian-born, London-based visual artist whose impressive photographic work was commissioned by The Macallan. Her art—dreamlike, tactile, and rooted in landscape—evokes the very essence of the brand. Through carefully layered imagery, she captures what cannot be bottled: the mist over the River Spey at dawn, the hush of forests, the slow pulse of time. Her work reminds us that craft and art are kindred spirits—both emerging from observation, patience, and emotional precision..."
